For a racing punter the TAB is the shop on the corner, but the law gives it a larger role than that. This section sets out who is allowed to take a bet at all.

Since 28 June 2025, section 74AAA of the Racing Industry Act 2020 has left TAB NZ as the one provider that may offer racing and sports betting inside New Zealand. TAB and Betcha are two brands of one operator, not rivals. No licence can be applied for, and no register of bookmakers exists.

The law bites the operator. DIA calls an overseas company offering these bets a lawbreaker, whereas no individual can be convicted merely for placing an offshore bet. TAB NZ betting is open from 18.
